The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 Dragging by the head, 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 save those that pray 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Are free of blame, 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
