The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the declining star, 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 He does not speak out of his own desires. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 Which one of mighty powers hath taught him, 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. 7 Then he drew near, then he bowed 8 he was but two bows' length or even nearer, 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 by the lote tree beyond which none may pass 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!) 16 (Muhammad's) eyes did not deceive him, nor did they lead him to falsehood. 17 He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 What! unto you the males and unto Him the females? 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Or is there for man whatever he wishes? 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
