۞ We have conveyed Our Word to them, in succession, so that they may give heed. 51 Those to whom We gave the Book before, believe in it. 52 And when it is read out to them, say: "We believe in it. It's the truth from our Lord. We had committed ourselves before it came." 53 Such people as these will receive a double reward, because they are steadfast and repel evil with good, and give alms out of what We have given them, 54 and because when they hear idle talk they turn away from it and say: 'We have our deeds, and you have your deeds. Peace be upon you. We do not desire the ignorant' 55 Surely you cannot guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He pleases, and He knows best the followers of the right way. 56 And they say: "If we follow the guidance with you, we would be snatched away from our land." Have We not established for them a secure sanctuary (Makkah), to which are brought fruits of all kinds, a provision from Ourselves, but most of them know not. 57 How many a city We have destroyed that flourished in insolent ease! Those are their dwelling-places, undwelt in after them, except a little; Ourselves are the inheritors. 58 Your Lord would never destroy a people until He had sent messengers to their capital cities, reciting to them Our revelations. Nor did We destroy a town unless their people became wrongdoers. 59 And whatever thing you [people] have been given - it is [only for] the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. And what is with Allah is better and more lasting; so will you not use reason? 60
