The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
