Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 You will be left secure here 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 "And do not follow those who exceed the limits." 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 Saleh said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they killed her, and then they became regretful. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
