In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 Keep vigil the night long, save a little - 2 Half of it,- or a little less, 3 Or a little more, and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly. 4 Surely We will make to light upon you a weighty Word. 5 Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words. 6 True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties: 7 So remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion. 8 He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian. 9 And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance. 10 Leave to Me those who belie, those who lead a life of pleasure, and bear with them yet a little while. 11 We have prepared for them fetters, flaming fire, 12 and a food that chokes, and a grievous chastisement. 13 On the Day the earth and the mountains will convulse and the mountains will become a heap of sand pouring down. 14 Verily, We have sent to you (O men) a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) to be a witness over you, as We did send a Messenger [Musa (Moses)] to Fir'aun (Pharaoh). 15 but Pharaoh rebelled against the Messenger, so We seized him remorselessly. 16 How, then, if you refuse to acknowledge the truth, will you protect yourselves on that Day which shall turn the hair of children grey, 17 The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled. 18 This, verily, is a reminder: let him who wills, then set out on a way to his Sustainer! 19
