Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
