The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 tearing away his skin! 16 Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289] 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
