He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another, 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 exalted, purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then He causes him to die, and puts him in his grave; 21 Then when He pleases, He will bring him back to life. 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food. 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 and then We cleaved the earth asunder. 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 And Grapes and nutritious plants, 28 and the olive, and the palm, 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 And from his mother and father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 but others will be gloomy 40 with darkness overspread: 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
