The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 of an orphaned relative 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
