Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We now remove the punishment for some days so you will again commit the same. 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
