Nay, by the Moon 32 And the night when on the wane, 33 By the morning when it brighteneth. 34 Lo! this is one of the greatest (portents) 35 Warn the men. 36 Unto him of you who will advance or hang back. 37 Every soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 save the People of the Right Hand 39 Sitting in the gardens, asking 40 concerning the sinners, 41 "What led you into Hell Fire?" 42 They will say, "We were not of those who prayed, 43 nor did we feed the destitute. 44 And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who entered into vain discourses. 45 "And we used to belie the Day of Recompense 46 "Until there came to us (the death) that is certain." 47 So the intercession of intercessors shall not avail them. 48 If such will be the Day of Judgment, what is the matter with them? Why do they run away from guidance, 49 As if they were frightened (wild) donkeys. 50 Fleeing from a lion? 51 Aye! every one of them desireth that: he should be vouchsafed scrolls expanded. 52 This will certainly never be the case! In fact, they are not afraid of the Day of Judgment. 53 No, indeed, surely, this is a Reminder. 54 So, whoever wills may benefit from it. 55 But they will not remember except as God wills: He is worthy to be feared, and He is worthy of forgiving 56
