The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 arise, and warn! 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 And your clothing purify 4 and defilement flee! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 He looked (at others); 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
