The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit]. 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire, 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 Who gives his wealth in order to be pure. 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 He verily will be content. 21
