The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 but We see it near. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
