The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Indeed your efforts differ. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 And as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah), 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 But save him who fears 17 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
