Thamood cried lies to the Envoys 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
