a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later times (generations). 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
