Said Firaun to the court members around him, “He is indeed an expert magician.” 34 who seeks to expel you from your land by his sorcery. What is your counsel' 35 They said: Put him off, (him) and his brother, and send into the cities summoners 36 and summon every skillful magician from all the cities." 37 So the sorcerers were assembled at a fixed time on a day appointed. 38 and the people were told: "Will you join the assembly? 39 Haply we shall follow the sorcerers if it should be they are the victors.' 40 And when the magicians came, they said to Firon: Shall we get a reward if we are the vanquishers? 41 He said: "Yes, you will then become those near-stationed to me." 42 Musa said unto them: cast whatsoever ye have to cast. 43 Thereupon they threw their [magic ropes and their staffs, and said: "By Pharaoh's might, behold, it is we indeed who have prevailed!" 44 Then Moses cast his staff and lo, it forthwith swallowed up their lying invention; 45 And down fell the sorcerers, prostrating themselves in adoration, 46 They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds, 47 and the Lord of Moses and Aaron." 48 Said [Pharaoh]: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Verily, he must be your master who has taught you magic! But in time you shall come to know [my revenge]: most certainly shall I cut off your hands and your feet in great numbers, because of [your] perverseness, and shall most certainly crucify you in great numbers, all together!" 49 They answered: "No harm [canst thou do to us]: verily, unto our Sustainer do we turn! 50 and we surely expect that Our Lord will forgive us our sins for we are the first ones to believe." 51
