He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because the blind man had come in his august presence. 2 How canst thou know, whether haply he might be cleansed, 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 For him who does not care, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 and then made the course of life easy for him, 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Indeed, he has not fulfilled that which He has ordered him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And grapes and herbage 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
