The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the heaven, and At-Tariq (the night-comer, i.e. the bright star); 1 And what shall make thee know that which the night-comer is? 2 It is the star that pierces through [life's] darkness: 3 There is no soul but that it has over it a protector. 4 Let the human reflect of what he is created. 5 He has been created from an ejected drop of fluid 6 Issuing from (the pelvis) between the backbone and the ribs. 7 Now, verily, He [who thus creates man in the first instance] is well able to bring him back [to life] 8 The Day when all the secrets (deeds, prayers, fasting, etc.) will be examined (as to their truth). 9 Then man will have no power or any helper. 10 So I call to witness the rain-producing sky, 11 And by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of vegetation),- 12 Most surely it is a decisive word, 13 not a flippant jest. 14 Behold, they [who refuse to accept it] devise many a false argument [to disprove its truth]; 15 but I shall bring all their scheming to nought. 16 So bear with unbelievers with patience, and give them respite for a while. 17
