a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
