The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
