Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad - 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment. 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 Enter among My servants 29 into My Paradise. 30
