The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 But not so the worshippers 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
