a large group of the earlier people 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
