A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 Verily we are undone. 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
