The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 then came down close 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 His heart lies not of what he saw; 11 what, will you dispute with him what he sees? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 and about the third deity, al-Manat? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 That indeed is a division most unfair! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Or is there for man whatever he wishes? 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
