You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle, 1 stand up to pray for much of the night. 2 Half of it, or lessen it a little, 3 Or increase a little upon it, and recite the Qur’an slowly in stages. 4 We are about to cast upon you a weighty Word. 5 Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise). 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with [complete] devotion. 8 [He is] the Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs. 9 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. 10 Leave it to Me to deal with the affluent ones who give the lie (to the Truth), and bear with them for a while. 11 Verily We shall have fetters with Us, and a roaring furnace, 12 food that chokes and painful punishment 13 On that day, the earth and the mountains will be violently shaken, and the mountains will be turned into heaps of moving sand. 14 BEHOLD, [O men,] We have sent unto you an apostle who shall bear witness to the truth before you, even as We sent an apostle unto Pharaoh: 15 But the Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a grievous punishment. 16 If therefore you disbelieve, how will you guard yourselves against a day that shall make the children grey-headed? 17 On that day, the heavens will be rent asunder. This is the decree of God which has already been ordained. 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
