The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 the believers who cooperate with others in patience (steadfastness) and kindness. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
