The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
