The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
