The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ When the sky has split [open] 1 hearing and obeying its Lord, as it must do; 2 And when the earth is flattened out, 3 and throws out of itself all that it contains 4 And listens and obeys its Lord, and it must do so; 5 O thou man! Verily thou art ever toiling on towards thy Lord- painfully toiling,- but thou shalt meet Him. 6 Whoever is given the Record in his right hand 7 Will have an easy reckoning, 8 And return to his people in happiness. 9 But whosoever is given his Record behind his back, 10 he shall call for destruction 11 and he will enter the blazing flame. 12 Truly, did he go about among his people, rejoicing! 13 and surely thought he would never return (to his Lord). 14 But he will indeed! His Lord was ever watching him. 15 I swear by the afterglow of sunset, 16 And by the night and that which it driveth together, 17 and the moon, as it grows to its fullness: 18 [even thus, O men,] are you bound to move; onward from stage to stage. 19 But what is the matter with them that they do not believe, 20 Why, when the Quran is recited to them, do they not prostrate themselves? ۩ 21 Yea those who disbelieve belie. 22 God is quite aware of what they are storing in their hearts. 23 Therefore give to them glad tidings of a painful punishment, 24 Except those who believe and do the right: For them there is reward unending. 25
