Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed your Lord only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
