The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 they see it as being far off; 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 Eager to roast; 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
