The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the sun and its radiant brightness, 1 by the moon when it follows the sun, 2 and by the day when it displays him 3 And [by] the night when it covers it 4 And by oath of the heaven and by oath of Him Who made it. 5 and the earth and all its expanse! 6 by the soul and how He formed it, 7 And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness, 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And indeed failed is the one who covered it in sin. 10 The tribe of Thamud denied with rebellion. 11 When among them the great wretch arose, 12 And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink! 13 Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! 14 He has no fear of its sequel. 15
