Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn 1 And [by] ten nights 2 Consider the multiple and the One! 3 The night as it advances, 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them). 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
