The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
