a good many of olden times, 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
