The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 who guard their privates 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
