The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
