The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the night, when it envelops, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
