The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
