He who is negligent to remember the Merciful One, to him We assign a satan as his boon companion, 36 whereupon, behold, these [evil impulses] bar all such from the path [of truth,] making them think that they are guided aright! 37 till, when he comes to Us, he says, 'Would there had been between me and thee the distance of the two Easts!' An evil comrade! 38 It shall not profit you today, since you did evil, that you are partners in the chastisement. 39 What, will you make the deaf hear, or guide the blind and he who is in clear error? 40 But if We should take you away, still We shall inflict retribution on them; 41 or show them to you suffering the torment with which We had threatened them. We are certainly dominant over them all. 42 So adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path. 43 And indeed, it is a remembrance for you and your people, and you [all] are going to be questioned. 44 And ask those of Our apostles whom We sent before you: Did We ever appoint gods to be worshipped besides the Beneficent Allah? 45
