In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 Stand (to pray) all night, except a little. 2 Half of it - or subtract from it a little 3 Or a little more; and recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style. 4 Surely We will make to light upon you a weighty Word. 5 Prayer at night leaves the strongest impression on one's soul and the words spoken are more consistent. 6 Indeed during the day you have a long schedule of occupations. 7 And remember the Name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with a complete devotion. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for a Guardian. 9 And bear patiently what they say and avoid them with a becoming avoidance. 10 And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little. 11 for, behold, heavy fetters [await them] with Us, and a blazing fire, 12 And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment 13 On the day when the earth and the hills rock, and the hills become a heap of running sand. 14 BEHOLD, [O men,] We have sent unto you an apostle who shall bear witness to the truth before you, even as We sent an apostle unto Pharaoh: 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure. 16 If you persist in disbelieving, how will you guard yourself against the (woe of the) Day that will turn children grey-haired, 17 And the heaven shall be split therein. His promise indeed must be fulfilled. 18 This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord. 19
