The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 except those that pray 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
