The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the Star when it goes down,- 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. 4 something that a very mighty one has imparted to him: 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 Will you dispute with him what he saw? 12 And verily he saw him yet another time 13 by the Lote-Tree of the Boundary 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 Have you then considered the Lat and the Uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 Are there sons for you, and daughters for Him? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have whatever he fancies? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
