The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 By the Moon as she follows him; 2 And by oath of the day when it reveals it 3 The night when it covers him over, 4 And the heaven and Him Who built it, 5 The earth and its spreading out, 6 And by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.), and Him Who perfected him in proportion; 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 He who nourishes it will surely be successful, 9 And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds). 10 Thamud belied in their exorbitance. 11 when the most wicked of them broke forth, 12 although God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!" 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
