Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
