The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you (Prophet Muhamad), the cloaked, 1 arise, and warn! 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 And your clothing purify 4 and defilement flee! 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 That Day will be a difficult day 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 and to whom I have granted resources vast, 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]. 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 I will cast him into the fire of Hell. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
